Mark has just returned from California after competing in the W orld
E xtreme Cagefighting ( WEC ) Championships which was held at the
Indian gaming centre in California.
Mark was lined up to fight lion's den fighter Travis Lutter but Lutter was offered a last minute fight with Marvin Eastman in theufc, and it was clear that Latter would not miss out on the chance to make his ufc debut. Promoter Scott Adams still wanted Mark to compete on his show so came up with another opponent who he felt would pose a good challenge for Mark.
Mark was happy for another opponent as he was in California training with Chuck Liddell's camp and so did not want to end his stay without a fight even if it was not going to be against Travis Lutter. This new opponent came in the shape of Will Bradford who Mark was told had an excellent kickboxing background and had won his last few fights by way of submission. Like any true professional Mark did not question the changing of opponents, he was there to fight and would fight anyone that the promoters put in front of him.
As the fight started Mark threw a powerful round kick which Bradford tried to block, but the force went through Bradfords guard and hit him in the head. Bradford then shot to take Mark down but he countered this and ended up in a dominant position on the floor. From the mount position he fired several short powerful punches to Bradford's head and Bradford was unable to reverse Mark. After several more heavy punches to the head Bradford had to tap to avoid any further punishment. Mark was victorious in 2mins 11secs of the first round and became the WEC North American middleweight champion. the WEC has invited Mark back to defend his title which will hopefully take place early in 2005. |
